At Pluma, we love unearthing stories from winemakers who pour their heart—and soul—into every vine. Today, we’re excited to shine a light on Place of Changing Winds, a truly distinctive winery tucked into the foothills of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria, Australia.
A Place Like No Other:
Place of Changing Winds was born out of respect—for the land, for its history, and for the natural rhythms of viticulture. Its name comes from the Wurundjeri people, the original custodians of the area, who called the land Warekilla, which loosely translates to “place of changing winds.”
Located 500 metres above sea level, the vineyard is surrounded by native bush and forest, creating a cool-climate haven where temperature swings between day and night really allow the grapes to breathe and develop.
Meticulous from the Ground Up:
What makes this place so special? For starters, it's densely planted. The estate is relatively small—around 3.1 hectares—but holds nearly 45,000 vines. The planting density is way above average, and the team has adapted a very hands-on, labour-intensive viticulture system.
They don’t take shortcuts. There are no synthetic chemicals used in the vineyard, and the entire winemaking process happens on site; the cellar is right next to the vines so the fruit goes from vine to fermenter in just minutes. This tight integration between vineyard and winery helps ensure the wines truly reflect their source.
The Team Behind the Magic:
The project is driven by Robert Walters, founder of Bibendum Wine Co., who spent years working with some of the greatest growers and winemakers around the world. Working with Rémi Jacquemain, the team has crafted a philosophy that’s as much about respect for place as it is about ambition.
Place of Changing Winds makes two broad styles of wine:
-
Estate Pinot Noir & Chardonnay — These come from their own high-density vineyard, reflecting a very pure, site-driven expression.
-
Grower Series (Syrah & Marsanne) — These are sourced from organic vineyards in Heathcote and Harcourt, with the team managing key decisions like picking dates.

The goal? To produce wines that are elegant, perfumed, and highly drinkable—not just powerful, but nuanced and refined.
We’re drawn to Place of Changing Winds because it embodies what we stand for at Pluma: thoughtfully crafted wine, committed to place, and made with integrity. Their approach — high-density planting, manual vineyard work, on-site winemaking — resonates deeply with our ethos of supporting producers who care deeply about their craft.
Final Thoughts:
Place of Changing Winds is more than just a winery. It’s a philosophy in action: planting densely, farming carefully, and letting nature speak through the wines. If you’re looking for something elegant, expressive, and rooted in place, it’s a name you should definitely know—and a wine you’d be proud to explore.
